In Davidson County, CFMT are representatives present at city meetings immediately following a disaster when activated by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, alongside Metro’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) due to a Memorandum of Understanding within Metro Government’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan. March 2021 Flood: Call It The Invisible Disaster.

In a two-year period that has included catastrophic and deadly tornadoes and other high-wind events, floods, a worldwide pandemic, and a downtown Nashville bombing on Christmas morning in 2020, the March 2021 flood somehow didn’t strike a collective chord in what has been a reliably responsive base of volunteers and donations.

That made recovery efforts problematic.

“The biggest challenge has been the limited funds raised for this disaster event, which was just more than $100,000,” said Amy Fair, Vice President of Donor Services at The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and secretary-treasurer for the Nashville VOAD.

“All of us believe there were two key factors: the invisibility of this disaster — not only nationally but locally — and the fatigue and financial challenges for donors following a year of charitable giving to help respond to the March 2020 tornado, COVID-19 pandemic, and December 2020 bombing,” Fair explained.

Although many survivors were able to recover on their own, Nashville VOAD member Disaster Recovery Connection — led by the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church — connected nearly 150 families with recovery needs with disaster case managers and made an additional 526 referrals to Nashville VOAD’s members with resources available to aid in survivor recovery.

Nashville Families Recovering a Year Since Devastating March 2021 Floods Working with Local Community Key as LTRG Wraps Up March 2021 Flood Efforts

Nashville Neighbors Fund: Christmas Day 2020 Bombing

Dec. 25, Christmas Day, 2021 marks one year since the early morning bombing in Downtown Nashville. The blast damaged dozens of buildings on Historic Second Avenue, knocking out telecommunications systems throughout the Southeast for several days, and leaving more than 1,000 employees without jobs and hundreds of residents displaced from their homes.

Thanks to the heroism of six Metro Nashville Police Department officers, who helped clear the area in the minutes before the blast, only the suicide bomber lost his life.

Because this disaster was the result of a crime, there were federal resources through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) that accompanied and supported the recovery. The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, in partnership with WTVF NewsChannel5, quickly established the Nashville Neighbors Fund to raise additional gifts to support the recovery efforts of the Christmas Day Bombing.

CFMT and the United Way of Greater Nashville worked together on allocating the financial resources provided, and in one case co-funded a grant. Nearly all of funding went to Catholic Charities for covering support to survivors impacted by bombing for items that were not eligible for VOCA funding.

March 2020 Tornado: Wreaking Havoc on Davidson, Putnam, Wilson Counties

Reba Gibson - March 2020 Tornado Survivor

What took mere minutes to crush buildings and shatter lives has taken several years to mend.

On March 3, 2020 a series of late-night and early morning tornadoes swept through Tennessee, leaving behind a path of death and destruction.

Twenty-five people died — 19 of them in Putnam County, including five children — and more than 300 people were injured in the series of tornadoes that touched down from West Tennessee through northern Davidson County, North Nashville, East Nashville, Mt. Juliet and Lebanon in Wilson County and to Cookeville and Putnam County.

To add disaster on disaster, the ongoing worldwide COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic set in just days later, resulting in the loss of more than 500,000 lives to date just in the United States, amid continuing economic turmoil and unemployment figures not seen since the Great Depression.

Despite everything, Middle Tennessee and beyond remained generous with their charitable contributions. Volunteers continued to show up daily and put in hours after hours of their time and effort to benefit nonprofits, churches and schools.
